Most recently I’ve been watching the Stargate Franchise from beginning to end. Quite the endeavor as the franchise is comprised of a total of 17 seasons, with roughly 20 episodes apiece, and 3 films.
For those who have never watched the show or know nothing about it. The franchise began in 1994, with a film featuring Kurt Russell as the leader of an elite military team known as “SG-1”. An ancient alien device is found at a archaeological dig in Egypt, which turns out to be a device that can create stable wormholes, allowing travel across space to other planets that have a matching device. The device is coined the “Stargate “.
An archaeologist, Dr. Daniel Jackson, who had a controversial opinion of aliens being tied to much of our ancient history and believed the pyramids were built by aliens as well, was chosen to be a part of the military team that travels through the Stargate for the first time. Once the team travels to another planet , they come into contact with an alien race known as the “Goa’uld”, a parasitic snake like race that uses humans as hosts. The host gains many abilities from the pairing, to include increased strength and speed, the ability to regenerate and perfect health. They also experience an extended period of life, upward of thousands of years. The Goa’uld utilize an army of elite warriors known as “Jaffa” to control their domains. Jaffa are humans who have been trained and groomed to be disciplined and obedient soldiers for their gods (the Goa’uld), while also serving as a walking incubator, where a small pouch is made in the torso, where a premature Goa’uld is placed until matured. While the Jaffa soldier carries the Goa’uld, he experiences an extended life of several hundred years, increased strength and speed, as well as perfect health and regeneration.
SG-1 also meets other humans on the alien planet, and find out that the Goa’uld posed as many of our ancient Gods, enslaved millions of humans and transported them across the galaxy to serve them (thus the presence of other humans , as well as identical cultures on other planets). The team fights and defeats the occupying Goa’uld on the planet, Ra, and frees the humans on the planet of his oppression.
The SG-1 TV series kicks off in 1997 and goes on for 10 seasons, with two expansion series in Stargate Atlantis (5 seasons) and Stargate Universe (2 seasons) and two more short films. The shows start where the movie left off and continues with the further exploration of the galaxy. war against the Gou’ild, and discovery of other aliens, technology and artifacts. The franchise has created a large cult like following, much like Star Trek, Star Wars, or Battlestar Galactica and is rumored to have further expansions in the works.
While watching the entire franchise, I’ve noticed some castings that surprised me and were at times comical considering their popularity or success in the future after the show. Some of the castings would leave me thinking “wow he/she is in this? Didn’t realize this was their cup of tea or something they’d be seen in”, while others I’ve seen in many other sci-fi shows and movies.
